Applications are now being accepted for 2014 Ethel Tory Language Scholarships for all European and Middle Eastern Languages.

Ethel Tory Biography

The Ethel Tory Language Scholarship provides funds to assist students undertaking full-time study outside Australia, in the following categories:

  • Language courses conducted off shore by ANU and recognised for credit towards an ANU award (degree).
  • Language courses offered by an approved international education provider and recognised for credit towards an ANU award (degree).
  • A program of study, offered by an approved international education provider, delivered in a foreign language and recognised for credit towards an ANU award (degree).

Value of Scholarship

Up to $2,500 to cover documented travel costs.

Eligibility

  • Must be an ANU student studying language at an intermediate/advanced (or equivalent) level within their ANU program
  • Must study full-time overseas in a language course conducted off-shore by ANU and approved for credit towards their ANU degree; or
  • Must study full-time overseas in a language course offered by an approved international higher education provider and approved for credit towards their ANU degree; or
  • Must study full-time overseas in a program of study offered by an approved international higher education provider, delivered in a foreign language and approved for credit towards their ANU degree.
  • Open to both Australian and international students, however, international students may not use the scholarship for study in their country of birth or citizenship.

Selection Criteria

The following criteria will be taken into account in ranking applications:

  • Academic merit, as evidenced in grades achieved in prior language study at ANU.
  • Student motivation and need for financial support, as detailed in a one-page personal statement outlining the student's reasons for participating in the international language study experience.
  • Whether the applicant has been awarded any other funding, grants or scholarships for language study.
  • Access and equity considerations, including, if relevant, financial circumstances. 

How to Apply

  1. Complete and submit the online application form.
  2. The following documents should be sent, as scanned attachments, to EthelTory.Language@anu.edu.au. Please state your name, degree and language to be studied in the subject line of the email
    • Itemised quotation of travel costs from a travel agent*
    • Citizenship documentation (international students only)
    • Access and equity supporting documentation, as required

* This can be an official quote on a letterhead, or an email from your travel agent, or a quote from an online booking page.

Important information about applying

  • All parts of the application should be received by midnight on the relevant deadline to be eligible for assessment.
  • Applicants will be contacted using the details provided on ISIS. Should staff not be able to contact an applicant through incorrect details, or because the applicant did not check their university email, this may result in the application being ineligible or in a scholarship offer being withdrawn.
  • Successful applicants will be required to update their bank details on ISIS and return a sign copy of the Conditions of Award. Should this not be done by the due date, it will be understood that the applicant does not wish to accept the offer of scholarship.

Application dates

Round one of the application process will be open through 2 May 2014.

Round two of the application process will be open through 26 September 2014.

Selection Process

Applications will be ranked by a committee with representation from the College of Arts & Social Sciences. Recommendations from the Committee will be approved by the College Dean. The number of scholarships awarded in each year will be contingent on the Ethel Tory Endowment fund.

Additional information for applicants

An Ethel Tory Scholarship covers any travel costs involved in getting to or from the location of your host university, including in-country travel, up to $2500.

It does not cover:

  • Side trips for personal reasons/travel
  • Travel Insurance
  • Accommodation/Food

The language study program must be completed as approved under the award of the scholarship. Upon completion of the course and return to ANU, the student must provide:

  • A short report in English (500-1000 words) on the study experience, submitted to EthelTory.Language@anu.edu.au
  • Official evidence from participating organisation, stating that the course of language study was completed (only if the course does not have an ANU course code). A certified copy of this can be sent to EthelTory.Language@anu.edu.au as a scanned attachment.

Failure to complete the course of study for which the scholarship was awarded may result in students being required to repay the scholarship funds.

l. Eligibility

  1. I am a first year student studying language, am I eligible to apply?
    Yes, you are eligible to apply. However, it is preferred that you will have completed at least three language courses at the time you apply.
  2. I am an international student, am I eligible to apply? International students are eligible to apply, but may not use the scholarship for study in their country of origin.
  3. Regarding the selection criteria, which courses are considered as intermediate/advanced level?
    In general terms, 2000- coded courses would be considered intermediate and
    3000-coded courses as advanced.

II. Application

  1. I would like to apply for the Ethel Tory Scholarship, is there a form that can
    be sent to me?

    You have to apply online through Apollo. Information on how to apply and required supporting documents can be seen in the above selection criteria and how to apply section.
  2. When can I submit my application?
    • If you plan to start your course in Semester 1 or winter session, you need to apply in the second round.
    • If you plan to start your course in Semester 2 or summer session, you need to submit your application in the first round.
  3. When do applications close?
    Students can apply at any time through the year, but applications will be downloaded at 2pm on the closing date for each round. These dates can be found on the website.
  4. I have submitted my online application. Do I need to do anything else?
    Submitting the online application form is only half of the application. To properly
    assess your application, we need the following documents:

    • A quote from an online booking page
    • An email from a travel agent
    • A note/quote on paper with an official logo
    • Citizenship documentation ( for International students only)
    • Access and equity statement (one page maximum)
  6. I applied for the first round, but was unsuccessful. I would like to apply for the second around. Do I need to submit a new application?
    No, you are not required to submit new application, but you need to notify us that
    you would like to reapply. If your circumstances have changed, for example you
    wish to apply for Access and Equity consideration; you will need to submit a
    statement to support your claim.

III. Supporting documents

  1. What are Access and Equity considerations?
    It is one of the criteria used in ranking applications. Access and Equity applications are separated into four categories: Indigenous Australian, difficult family circumstances (not financial), rural or remote areas, disability or medical conditions.
  2. What evidence do I need to provide as an applicant from rural or isolated
    area?
    • A certified copy of your High School certificate
    • Evidence of your former residence. This could be a letter stating your name and your address, such as a telephone bill, credit card bill or Centrelink letter, etc.
  3. Itemised quotation of travel costs from a travel agent--What does "itemised
    quotation" mean?

    It is a quote from a travel agent stating the cost of your air travel, airline and dates of your flights. You may get this quote from the STA travel agent at ANU Union court or your preferred travel agent. A quote from an airline’s or travel agent’s website may be acceptable. An itemised quote will show the cost of your tickets, but also that of electives like insurance, extra baggage allowance or a carbon offset price.
  4. Does citizenship documentation mean that I should photocopy my passport?
    Yes, you need to provide a copy of your passport which contains a photo and country of origin. This can be sent as scanned attachment at this address: EthelTory.Language@anu.edu.au. The Citizenship documentation requirement only applies to international students. Australian citizens are not required to supply this information.
  5. Where I can send my supporting documents?
    The documents should be sent as scanned attachments to
    EthelTory.Language@anu.edu.au. Please state your name, degree and language to be studied in the subject line of the email (eg. Smith – Bachelor of Arts/Asia-Pacific Studies – Chinese).

IV. Others

  1. Does this scholarship cover accommodation?
    No, this scholarship only covers documented travel costs, such as air travel and ground transportation, if necessary. This does not include travel from your home to the airport.
  2. Does this scholarship cover ground transportation?
    Yes, However, you need to provide itemised quote and receipt. It can cover bus/train trips that get you from the airport to your final destination.
  3. When the money will be transferred to my nominated account?
    We will inform you of the approximate date of transfer in the offer letter.
  4. Would it be possible to have the details of this award added to my academic transcript?
    Yes, this will be arranged once you have signed and returned the Conditions of Award.
